view on overseas life

I am penning this essay to give a glimpse of what a glitzy, fabulous overseas worker’s life looks like outside from Instagram or Facebook.

I have worked for the last seven years in Singapore as an office worker with “acceptable” salary.
Acceptable means not that high to afford luxurious bags on a whim and not that low not to afford a decent meal somewhere fancy, once In a while.

The truth about being “abroad” is often misconstrued back home as someone who has the money.
With money, it is true that we earn more than what we earn back in PH but what other people don’t realize is that, we also need to spend more than what we spend in PH. Food, accommodation, bills and personal effects are not cheap here.

Alongside the physical challenge to remain healthy because medical bills are far too expensive in a foreign land, what affects more to us is the emotional and mental challenge, we need to go through, perhaps alone.

As someone who grew up in a small family where all our concerns are openly discussed at our family’s dinner table, Sundays spent with family, occasions done at home, night drives with mom and dad and in on several occasions, ice cream trips late at night, becoming independent was something so hard to come by.

I never knew that when I decided to work overseas, I have signed up for challenging roles.
For instance, when I joined the company, I am the only foreign worker. While they share stories and laugh at jokes, I was in my own world. It’s not because they were unfriendly to me, it’s just that, they are more expressive using their own language. I talk in small voice for fear of standing out. I lie low to fit in, to feel that sense of belongingness, to be a part of the team.

Whenever it gets tough at work, I succumb to my made-up hole, endlessly repeating, “this too shall pass.” On my worst days, I was screamed at, and blamed for something I took instructions from, but I hold responsibility because I was the person-in-charge. I will take the blame and promise to do better when in all honesty, It was not entirely my fault. But I am a professional and being a professional means taking accountability for your actions. It is where my maturity comes in handy, when I have to apologize for something not because I am sorry it happened but because I was the one who got unlucky enough to claim it.
It is such a challenge to put on a brave face the next morning though, when you feel like dying and you come to work and pretend that everything is okay.

On my better days, my leave would be approved and I’d get to spend no more than two weeks back in PH or traveling somewhere to unwind and rejuvenate. It is in these days that I feel alive. It is where those Instagram worthy photos stem from. It is where onlookers would say, “oh she’s living a good life!”.

But among those days where I am captured as carefree, happy-go-lucky and a jetsetter, most days all year-round are spent silently working, getting my tasks done without glitches, enduring near-impossible deadlines, to name a few.

I have developed anxiety and I got depressed a hundred times over, not to mention having acne all over my face due to stress for failing to achieve expectations.

Complaining, I am not. I am merely stating what happens behind the scene.

Through it all, I have been taught a lot of lessons. I have defied gravity to go after what I want. I have been brave enough to experience it all and it makes me proud that I singlehandedly fought to get to where I am now.

Honestly, I am far from where I want to be, It’s far from the glitzy and fab life that I have envisioned to be, just yet. I don’t even own a house in full or have that dream car of mine yet, monetarily speaking. But personally, I feel like all the happenings in my life are preparing me for the next big thing. And the culmination of all my blood, sweat and tears combined over the years will be definitely worth it.

7 year itch

It’s my last day at work!!

Wow! It has been 6 years, 11 months and 13 days from when I started working in this company.
Sure I’ve had my ups and downs, I invested my time and my youth, my 20s to be exact.
It’s been a roller coaster, love and hate kind of relationship. But I loved that I came this far.

I am someone who Is indecisive about commitment but when I do, I stick to it, no matter what.
It is unfortunate to leave a company who has provided me for the last seven years of my life but I see it as an essential tool for my growth. With that, I am forever thankful.

Working overseas and coming to a company of strangers, it was never easy. A lot of overseas workers go through the same struggle as I do, for sure and honestly, at times, I succumb to thoughts of feeling small just because I am different. I brave conversations wherein they all laugh at the same brand of jokes just because they speak the same language. I, on the other hand, don’t want to look clueless so I learned the art of smiling without ever really knowing why. God knows how I tried to fit in, and fitting in, I curl at my own hole where the world becomes mine regardless of whether they involve me or not. I found courage in voicing out my opinions in a sea of people who knows so much more than I do and share the same brand of childhood just because they live as “locals”. I found peace amidst the anxiety of highly being singled out and I found confidence in knowing that although I am different, I am relatable and that makes me easy to be with.

My last day reminded me so much about how I first started. How I awkwardly tried to learn as fast as I can and how I tried to understand everything as if my life depended on it. It reminded me of my struggles and the jubilation whenever I overcome something. It was a cycle.

This company contributed so much to my growth as an individual. I have learned and relearned so many things about myself. It was a push and pull thing, the fight of light and darkness. This company helped me gather my strength by giving me hardships and at the same time, helped me celebrate by giving me reasons to, as well.

I am leaving this company in high spirits and I am leaving this company bringing with me rich memories.

I am thankful to my boss for giving me the opportunity to work for him and this company. I am thankful to the people who has been part of my journey, who made me feel like I belong and who I have found friends with. It was splendid.

But above all, I am most especially thankful to God for always nourishing my spirit whenever I feel like giving up and pulling me back to the herd when I am slowly drifting away. Thank You Lord, you are always good.

6 years 11 months and 13 days, indeed, it was longer than what I wished for.

mondays

Aug 6 2018 4:18pm

This is my last Monday as an employee.

… And I’ve never been alive!

As I go through this withdrawal phase, I can’t resist feeling thankful for being employed and yet relieved for breaking myself free.

Mondays are usually harsh and tough to come by but because it’s my last Monday, I feel excited and invigorated. I am happy to come this far and I am in awe with the wonders that I’ve been receiving all this time.

I look forward to new beginnings sooner than later but for now I’m opting to relax. To float. To pause.
I crave so much time for myself and for the things I love to do so I’m taking this chance to seize the chance!

I told my sister that more than anything, I want to figure out what it is that I really want to do. It is very practical to take on jobs that are available but at least once in my life, I want to pursue something that I am passionate about. Who knows? Pursuing it may not feel “work” at all.
So I’ll never work a day in my life, if that happens.

I’ve been working really hard for the last 10 years after graduation and even so, I honestly feel as though I’ve never really achieved anything great at all. I am a mediocre employee who lives from pay check to pay check. I feel like I am always in transit with no clear destination in mind and with that, I begin to wonder if there would be other paths for me.

Since I’ve done the sheep employee type, I’m wondering how it is to be the boss of my own. I don’t want to limit myself to other possibilities of advancement. Frankly, I’ve always wanted a promotion but I never had the chance. What they Don’t see in me, I am really not sure.
But one thing I am sure about is that, I don’t want to be like that forever.

If the path I chose never really led me anywhere, why not take a new path and see if it’s the same?
I want to have the full week to be counted and not just the Fridays.
I want to have Mondays that I look forward to, rather than dread to wake up to.
After all, this life is a one-way ticket!

breakouts and heartbreaks

My face is in bad condition AGAIN.

My breakouts are taking over it.
I have had bouts of depression due to my worsening acne condition.
And it’s not that I am passive about treatment but I’ve met different dermatologists and spent $$ for it already but it keeps on coming back.

After Accutane for a year plus a lot of intensive steroids which made me fat by the way, my acne stopped. I thought my acne will end there but when I stopped the meds, my acne made its comeback.

Honestly, I am so tired of this. I am so heartbroken. I am more than upset and I can’t do anything to it anymore. My skin has lost its lustre. I resigned to the fact that indeed, beauty fades.

I just resigned from work and I have high hopes that my skin will be so much better since I would be stress-free and would have the proper time and right mind set to it, but the attack is on again.

I know for a fact that this is purely HORMONAL. I have irregular periods and it worsened when I lived here. But even so, I can’t bring myself to eat up birth control pills because I strongly believe in natural healing.

I am keeping myself busy by thinking happy thoughts, I feel like these breakouts will fade away eventually. I am rooting on that as I don’t want to hang my self-confidence on the look of my skin in my face.

Skin fairy godmother, please hear my plea.

the arrow

The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that I have just made a right choice.

There’s no point of return ‘cause I don’t want to return.

It will not be an easy feat from here on, as I am cutting my means of financial freedom and I am starting from scratch again but there’s no better timing than what I have in the moment.

I am glad that I made the decision because it means I am taking the risk to get better chances at life rather than being passive and just letting life pass me by. I am actively participating in life by thinking about new ways to reinvent myself, to ignite my passion with other things that I am capable to do.

I am putting on a brave face every time I think about being jobless ‘cause it’s my first time in a long time and yes, I do believe that it won’t take long.

I am particularly inspired these days when I heard about a Kdrama’s advice on a daughter who resigned from her 9-year-job  when the dad said “Beyonce wouldn’t gain immense success as a solo artist had she stayed as a Destiny’s child member!” and I agree. Without a doubt.

Most of the times we feel unsure are those times we are taking a pause to re evaluate the paths that we either continue or leave. An arrow cannot hit anything without being pulled back. I think I am in that phase where I pull myself back and aim where I want to land.

I have attained peace in knowing that I am under construction. I am at peace in knowing that I need to trust my process and be in it, every step of the way ‘cause this time in my life will never repeat again.

Aja!

PMY

I love you, Park Min Young!

I know I am taking this fangirling mood to the next level but I guess, it’s what every fangirl’s heart is all about. Gosh, at 31!

You admire someone because of their talent and you try to dig in deeper about their real life characters in the hopes that what you see is actually what you get in real life. PMY is not an exception. I have watched Netflix’s Busted and found her interesting.

I love her level of cool, unafraid to hold a snake, to touch something from a hole where you wouldn’t know what’s in there. She is a problem solver and she knows how to use her charms for her benefit. She seemed calm and collected, logical and funny at the same time. She was fun to watch.

After watching Busted, I began to search other works of her. I watched Healer, watched her interviews, watched BTS on her various dramas. I think she’s pretty and honest, two combination I am looking in someone to be fanatic with. Right now, she's with Park SeoJoon in their drama "what's wrong with Secretary kim" and while I love to see more of their chemistry in that show, I held back since I want to watch it completed in Korea.

Like every fangirl, I shipped her to her various co-stars. I like seeing her with Yeon Woojin the most because he’s shy. He looks like he has harbored secret feelings with her but afraid to let it all out so he always looked guarded and shy around her.

The thing about PMY though is, I really can’t see anything about her private affairs. Who she dated, Lee Min Ho being a big name but she never really bothered sharing about it. It’s hard to find out about her family too, her parents’ job, her sister’s face etc. She’s a huge mystery.

She seemed outgoing, contrary to her “upper class” aura. She loves to laugh a lot and when she smiles, it’s like a ray of sunshine on a gloomy day. Deep. haha

Like every fangirl’s heart, I wish to see her in real life.

Who knows? :D

my hands

Believe in yourself.

I always look at people with so much positivity and I hope to emulate it from them.

I am surrounded by people who are either desperate or anxious about getting ahead in life and with that, I feel the pressure to keep up as well. It’s like I am queueing for something which I am not so sure what is it about but I keep queueing because I don’t want to fall last, anyway.

Then I had quite a time for reflection and thought that maybe, I’m super conscious with keeping up with everyone that I lose sight of what I really wanted to pursue. Becoming safe by riding the tide with everyone else is good but in the long run, I don’t want to look back and say that I’ve wasted my time chasing something that did not really have a meaning to me.

It’s like I’m ordering a luxury bag. It is so trendy and I’m getting excited about it just because I would have it like everyone else but not really because I am not into it in the first place.

I realized that I need to find and pursue something that I am passionate about. Because in that way, I’d find my purpose, the meaning why I do things the way they are, and in the process, it will let me grow as a person with direction, and with that, I will be satisfied.

I want to be positive in my dealings with various turmoil, with long pauses that seemed like it’s the end, in the darkness that tries to blind me as if there’s no light. I want to have the hope that life will bring me to a greater high, and feel secured that I will see it through the end, no matter what.

I may not take the same route as everyone else and it may take longer than others, but I’d like to believe that I will get there eventually. And I have to keep my faith to make it happen.

Believe in yourself.
